General info about Villa Oleander

Why Villa Oleander?

Villa Oleander is the ideal vacation destination to relax for one or more couples or as a family vacation with up to 8 persons on 160sqm living area and 40sqm terraces in the beautiful surroundings of Elounda.

Enjoy the breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea and the mountains of Crete on three beautiful terraces and a pool level to relax and enjoy together. Due to south orientation you can choose between pure sun and the protection of terrace roofs on the comfortable pool loungers all day long. At night, the romantically illuminated Elounda is at your feet.

The spacious villa offers you all amenities such as air conditioning, fully equipped kitchen, four bathrooms, washing machine, flat screen TV and Nespresso coffee.

The excellent internet connection with blazingly fast wifi throughout the house and outside also allows perfect home office work with fascinating ocean views! The connection grants smooth video conferencing as well as trouble-free enjoyment of all major streaming services.

History & Renovation

Villa Oleander was built in 2005 together with the neighboring villa on the left on a 4.000sqm plot. The approx. 2.000sqm belonging to Villa Oleander extend from the parking lot over the building and pool area down to the street.

In the spring of 2022, many furnishing and equipment features were completely renewed.

Address & Surroundings

A peculiarity of the villas in this area is that there is neither a direct street name nor house numbers.

The main road that leads from Elounda via Pano Elounda to Kato Pines is called „Epar.Od. Fournis-Elountas“. From this road, in Kato Pines, the first turnoff is to the right into the villa area.

By car you are in Elounda in 5 minutes with numerous shopping possibilities, restaurants, beach and harbor (see also under „Tips“). From the harbor in Elounda there is a regular boat transfer to the island of Spinalonga. In 20 minutes you can reach Agios Nikolaos, the largest town in the area with many more shopping and dining options.

We recommend to always choose the bigger roads via Elounda and Agios Nikolaos for excursions and to the airport, because the supposedly „direct“ route via Fourni is a rather slow route with many small and bumpy roads with possibly many sheep and also free-roaming horses on the road!

Arrival

Arrival via rental car from the airport

Arrival by rental car

IMPORTANT for navigation: The seemingly direct route suggested by the navigation (exit from the highway at „Neapoli“) leads over very small and bumpy roads and is not recommended, especially for the first arrival! Free-roaming sheep and also horses are not uncommon here.
  1. Instead, first enter „Elounda“ in the navigation (or as an intermediate destination) and only then „Kato Pines“.
  2. The route then leads to Agios Nikolaos, where just before the town the turnoff left to Elounda is indicated (on the left behind the crossroads the building of the company „Knauf“ can be seen).
  3. Follow the signs to Elounda and drive in Elounda until you reach the port.
  4. Drive past the parking lots at the harbor and then turn right at the traffic circle, then after the harbour turn left and then take the first right again.
  5. This road then leads up through Pano Elounda and after the switchbacks to Kato Pines.
  6. In Kato Pines you will see the public garbage cans on the left side of the road. Immediately after that, turn right into the road and follow it for about 300m until you reach Villa Oleander. The parking lot is just to the right of the road.

Arrival via taxi from the airport

If you are staying for more than a week, it may be worth taking a taxi from the airport and booking a rental car in Elounda, which is usually cheaper, rather than at the airport.

For the taxi transfer we recommend our neighbour Christos: +30 6977 432787. The transfer costs about 86 € per way.

There are a few local car rental companies on site. Here we recommend Eagle Car: eloundarentacar.com.

Tips

Our recommendations for shopping, gastronomy & leisure

Our personal tips for your stay around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos.

Grocery shopping in Elounda

Grocery shopping in Elounda

  • For the daily purchase of food and vegetables we recommend the Elounda Market („Bazaar“ chain). Here you will find everything incl. branded articles at reasonable prices, as well as fruits & vegetables in good quality. The supermarket is located directly at the harbor.
  • For meat products we recommend Andrea’s Butcher Shop (Epar.Od. Fournis-Elountas 8, right at the corner to Naxou) when coming from the villa to Elounda.
  • Fridays from 07:00h at the parking lot next to the port there is also a farmer’s market.
  • There is a large Lidl in Agios Nikolaos that stocks a wide range of branded products.
Restaurants in Elounda and surroundings

Restaurants in Elounda and surroundings

  • The next restaurant – and also the most colourful one – is Mamma Mio in Epano Pines, which is just a 10-minute walk away. Giorgos is the most welcoming host! In the summer, there’s always a big party here on Sunday evenings.
  • There are many good restaurants at the port and in the streets behind it. The best pizza is at the Porto Rino directly at the harbor. We also recommend the „Mezzo“ café right next to it.
  • A very good restaurant with daily fresh caught fish is the Kanali directly at the harbor.
  • Very good European-Mediterranean cuisine is available on the harbor promenade at Daniel & Andrea in the Lotus Eaters with very nice hosts and even very good house wine.
  • One of the best cuisines is the Moon Spinners restaurant at the end of the harbor promenade with terrace on the water. The food here is really excellent and so is the hostess!
  • We also highly recommend the Magali restaurant, located directly opposite the beach on the way to Plaka!
  • Very good cocktails in a nice, modern atmosphere can be had at the Babel Bar also at the harbor.
  • By far the best Greek taverna we know in Crete is the Taverna Krassopsychia about 1 hour away on the plateau Lasithi near the Psychro Grotto. If you go there, be sure to make a reservation and enjoy the excellent food, which also attracts a lot of Cretan residents.
  • The nearest taverna below the villa is Mary’s Kitchen in the historical part of Pano Elounda. Here you can enjoy the original way of life of Crete in the small cozy café.
  • In Heraklion we can recommend a very nice restaurant with great roof terrace and view over the city: Ntoré Gastronomy directly at the lively Eleftherias Square. Also very remarkable is The Home café in the city centre.
Food delivery

Food delivery

  • Due to the lack of a street address for Villa Oleander, ordering food delivery is a bit more complicated. However, there are many restaurants in Elounda where you can order food and then pick it up.
  • The Ariadne Restaurant and Pizzeria already knows the address and delivers directly to the villa in about 20 minutes.
Beach club, SPA & massage

Beach club, SPA & massage

  • A very nice beach club north of Elounda is Ikaros Beach with very nice beach beds (20€ a day), good cocktails and snacks, and a very good sushi restaurant right next to it.
  • In the large hotels in Elounda there are also public SPA areas with massage and beauty treatments. Highly recommended is the „Domes of Elounda“ in the north of the city.
  • Especially recommended for tension and pain is the Shinto Shiatsu Massage at Margot, a very experienced massage therapist from England, directly on the beach promenade of Elounda next to „Rudi’s Music Bar“. Telephone appointment at +30 695 558 4461.
